After 10+ years of playing and coaching, I break down the five most important things I practice every time I step on the pickleball court to improve fast: (1) team positioning and coverage, prioritizing who covers the line and who covers the middle (especially when the ball is near the sideline) and following the ball together; (2) footwork at the kitchen line using shuffle steps, angle shuffles, and drop steps, with a free resource! (3) “twos and fours,” focusing on return intention (deep, high, middle/cross-court), shading to cover gaps, and being ready to counterattack the fourth shot drive; (4) third-shot decision-making—using my strengths to drive or drop, driving if the returner isn’t set, and not rushing in; and (5) prioritizing balance with a wide split step in transition to reset safely and reach the non-volley zone under control.
