The Modern 3rd Shot:
- It’s not all about the drop anymore. There are more options depending on what the return looks like.
- What has been embraced more recently as an alternative to the drop is that if the returns lands shorter in the court and bounces a bit high then you can and should drive it. Your goal on every point should be to set up shots that you can attack and if your attacking opportunity comes right away off of your opponents return then great…take advantage of it.
- Dropping and driving a short high ball are not the only two things to do with a drop
- Dropping is a highly precise shot, attempting to drop on a very strong return that lands deep and has you on the move or otherwise pressed in some way is not a good idea because there is a lot of downside to a bad drop. Your risk of hitting it in the net or producing a VERY attackable ball for your opponents is very high and there is not much wiggle room between those two extremes.
- Your best option when you're pressed in someway is to hit a neutralizing drive and keep it as low as you can when crossing the net so that the opposing team that is likely at the net will be forced to hit up on a volley. The downside of a bad drive is not as bad as the downside of a bad drop.
- Work your backhand drop and get strong there too, not just the forehand. When drilling, start with the backhand so you can be sure to get those reps in and it’s not just an afterthought after you’ve worked your forehand.
- As much as possible, have forward momentum working for you on your drops. Move early and quickly and early in order to create enough space so that you can step in when you hit a drop. Far too often, we see people not move back for enough and quick enough and miss that opportunity. Then, drop it while falling back and that’s not going to be helpful toward hitting a strong, consistent drop.
- Cross court drops are easier than Down The Line drops because you have more length to work with therefore you can hit a flatter arc and it will be easier to keep that low. Good down the line drops are certainly possible but are a bit tougher to execute because you have to hit with a somewhat higher arc and more precision is required to keep that ball low after the bounce.
- Nothing on the pickleball courts is an absolute…it almost always “depends”.
