Susannah Barr is drilling counters at the kitchen line while visiting pro Nick Wade drives third shots straight at her. Three targets are down on his side: his kitchen corner, midcourt on the middle line, and midcourt on the cross sideline. The point isn't to survive the drive. It's to counter it somewhere that hurts.

❌ What goes wrong
• Blocking the drive back instead of countering it, which hands the pace straight back and keeps you on defense
• Conceding backwards on the backhand side instead of stepping across
• Getting caught on your heels, half-committed to the ball
• Waiting to read the drive fully before you move
✅ What to do instead
• Line the drive up and counter it, rather than absorbing it
• Step ACROSS on the backhand counter, not backwards
• Commit to the ball even without a perfect read: "when you get jammed up in between, that's when things go wrong"
• Place the counter into a target instead of just returning it
