Pickleball Fundamentals For Beginners

Having a strong foundation in pickleball fundamentals will set you up for long-term success on the court. In this video, we break down some of the most important fundamentals every beginner should learn to start playing with confidence.

First, it all starts with your grip. We recommend the continental grip, which you can find by forming a “V” with your dominant hand and placing it along the edge of the paddle. This grip gives you versatility across all shots. A helpful tip, keep your index finger slightly higher than your thumb to improve control and range of motion.

Next, master the ready position. This is how you prepare while your opponent is hitting the ball. Keep your paddle up in front of your chest, elbows in front of your body, and the paddle tip pointed upward. This position helps you stay balanced and ready for both forehands and backhands.

Finally, keep your backswing short and compact. In pickleball, less is more. A big backswing takes too much time and often leads to errors or hitting the ball too hard. Focus on quick, controlled movements to stay consistent.

Mastering these fundamentals will help you improve consistency, control, and overall shot selection on the court.
