JT, looking for ways to enhance pickleball performances, decided to work with Zane on the following : the fifth shot following a third shot drive, closing the gap to the kitchen, perfecting the backhand roll and flick, and optimizing volleys taken out of the air.
Navratilâs initial focus was on JTâs backhand roll. JT admitted uncertainty about his technique, particularly concerning power and control. Navratilâs expert observation identified over-extended follow-throughs as the primary issue. This common mistake often leads to inconsistency, a critical flaw at higher levels of play.
To address the backhand flick, Navratil introduced a quick acceleration drill. This drill, designed to enhance JTâs backhand, required rapid, sharp movements with minimal follow-through. The objective was to develop a more effective, snappy backhand, increasing both control and speed.
After the drill, JT noted a marked improvement in his shots, feeling quicker and more controlled. This methodical approach exemplifies Navratilâs coaching style, breaking down complex techniques into manageable components for more effective learning.
Navratil then addressed JTâs positioning and shot selection near the kitchen line. JT often hesitated between volleying and letting the ball bounce, particularly when preparing for a two-handed backhand dink. Navratil stressed a âvolley first instinct,â urging JT to take shots early to exploit his height advantage and reduce opponentsâ reaction time.
Navratil's guidance on recognizing when to step back and let the ball bounce was crucial for maintaining optimal positioning and control, reinforcing the importance of quick decision-making in advanced play.
