What was the toughest habit for you to break?
Video Transcript
Hi everybody it's CJ Johnson here.
I hope that you got a chance to turn on Wimbledon not because you are a great tennis fan but because one of the most intriguing story since sports happened during that first week. It was the story of Marcus Willis. He was 700 ranked something player in the world and he fought his way into the tournament by going through a long qualifying round and then he won his first round match. That gave him the right to get destroyed by Roger Federer in the second round.
It wasn't the wasn't that story that was so intriguing it was a story about Willis himself. I was amazed when I watched this guy walk onto the court. Here is on center court right probably last week maybe he was teaching tennis - 10 year olds. Now he is here on center court, biggest stage in tennis in the world against one of the greatest players of all time.
I probably would be nervous. Ooh my goodness I can't imagine how I would feel this guy was just loving it. He's looking around he's smiling he was in such gratitude and appreciation for where he was and it was absolutely amazing. It wasn’t the tennis although you know after the first set he got blown away in that first set pretty handily by Roger so you can tell his nerves had come through but in that second set he played some good tennis.
In fact I thought it was really cool in the second said he wins his first game and the whole crowd goes wild of course he is also a Brit so it helps that he's playing in front of his home crowd. But what he showed me is that people can really change. There was a video on youtube in fact you can probably still see it if you google it where it shows him in the middle of a match
drinking an RC Cola and having what looks like a snicker bar. Turns out he was 30 pounds overweight and even though he was a childhood prodigy this kid was a discipline issue. All the way he never did the things that were necessary to be one of the best players in the world
What can we learn from that is one first of all success does take discipline.
There's a lot of people who want success but wanting success is not going out there and getting it
you have to find ways to work hard and to be disciplined to attain success. Sheer talent alone isn't going to get you there.
The second thing is old habits can be broken.
I mean yeah he's in his early twenties now but some things have changed in his life. I sounds like he's got a new girlfriend who encouraged him to do a few things differently. He lost 30 pounds. He is in better physical fitness and that's showed through so we can change our habits. We are not a victim of our habits unless we absolutely refuse to change.
I think really the last thing is never give up on yourself.
Here's a guy he was about ready to come to the states to teach instead of play tennis and here's
some things changed inside of his life and it gave him the courage to go back out and give it one more try. Just to not give up on himself
Now who knows what that story for him is going to be like in the future. I don't know none of us know yet but it gives us at the knowledge that we can change so enjoy the journey while we're on it.
