Hi everybody it's CJ Johnson.
Back in my early twenties I worked full-time as a fitness instructor.
It was the era of Jane Fonda so we were typically teaching 2-3 hours worth of aerobics every single day. It was a pretty common practice for me and another Fitness Instructor to stop at Wendy's on our way home to have a bite to eat. It was fast, it was filling it was cheap and they had a salad bar which we thought was healthy. Not the way we did it!
It was full of calorie bombs in fact I remember piling my salad high on the plate. It had to have 2-3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, bacon and of course ladles at least 3-4 ladles of blue cheese dressing on top of it. Probably 1500 plus calories I was eating after working out all day. It occurs to me that there's a lot of salads out there that are that are made that same way today. They are not healthy.
They’re calorie bombs so the first five ingredients are going to steer you in the right direction.
Now here's the last 2.
Dried fruit.
You see this very commonly in salads today. A 1/3 of a cup of cranberries typically has about a hundred and twenty calories and 26 grams of sugar. The calories don't sound so bad but your daily total sugar intake is recommended to be at 24 grams of sugar which is already six teaspoons. Stay away from the dried fruit there's plenty of other things that you can put on there are way better for you and don't increase your sugar intake.
The other one is glazed nuts.
Again another common thing that you're seeing. Nuts can be great for you in fact that I tend to eat 14 almonds between meals. It’s very filling to me because it's got great fats and it's got protein and it's got a lot of vitamins and minerals our body needs. The minute we start to put sugar on them including high fructose corn syrup which is typical when we glaze nuts we turn something that's a little bit healthy into a huge calorie bomb.
Watch your salads. Lots of fruits and vegetables in those salads.
Stay away from those high 7 calorie toppings and you're off to eating healthy
